As a part of the biogenetically unique manzamine family, Manzamine B is found
in sea sponge extracts. Manzamine is a type of alkaloid which displays a
perhydroisoquinoline ring system and has shown antitumor, antibacterial, and
strong anti-malarial activities. It exhibits an immunostimulatory effect,
meaning that in addition to killing the malaria parasite, it induces an immune
response that helps clear the disease from the body. The 11-membered
unsaturated azacycle of manzamine B can be synthesized by ring-closing
metathesis through a Diels-Alder strategy.
