Layman's explanation: Salinamide B is produced by the marine bacterium Streptomyces, an actinomycete that has been isolated from the surface of the jellyfish Cassiopeia xamachana, collected from the Florida Keys. Salinamide B shows moderate antibiotic activity against Gram-positive bacteria and exhibits potent topical anti-inflammatory activity. The biosynthesis of salinamide is currently being studied with hopes of generating unnatural salinamide analogues, which would be used to further understand its anti-inflammatory properties. Salinamide is thought to be a possible contender in the treatment of some forms of arthritis.
