Layman's explanation:
Dichromate is used in a number of chemical reactions. Its ionic properties allow it to form many salts that can be used in oxidation-reduction reactions. Since the dichromate ion is soluble in water and many of its salts are not, it is easily identified in mixtures and solutions, with the formation of a precipitate. Because of Chromium s many oxidized states, many compounds it forms are colorful! These can be seen and identified qualitatively in redox reactions. Chromium compounds and ions are made by isolating Chromium form chromite ore.
