Empirical formula: H2O
Formula weight: 18.015 g/mole
Summary: Calculated Structure
Short description: Water is a major constituent of all living matter consisting of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen.
Keyword: solvent
Keyword: EPA
Common name: Water
Layman's explanation: Water descends from the sky as rain and irrigates the land. Water can be used as a solvent for dissolving many forms of solids. It can also be used as both a coolant and a reactant. Everything from blood to tears are variations of the water compound. Water quality is an important issue in the environment. Safe water, water free of harmful toxins, is important for agriculture and community consumption. Criteria for safe water is based on levels deemed suitable for drinking, swimming, farming etc. The EPA uses specific water safety standards used by many states for water safety management. States may also adopt their own water safety standards for government approval.
