R-Carnitine, which is a B vitamin, plays a major role in changing stored body fat into energy in mammals. Its primary role is to transport large fat molecules into cellular compartments, where energy metabolism takes place. Without R-Carnitine fats would collect within the cells and the in bloodstream. R-Carnitine has been used in therapy as a stimulator of fatty acid degradation and also used as medicine for hemodialysis, heart disease, and myopathic deficiency.
