Layman's explanation:
Silicon Monoxide is an environmentally stable, amorphous brown solid, thermally stable up to 400ºC, where it disproportionates into quartz (SiO2) and silicon (S). Its applications range from electronics, protective coatings, to optics. It is an excellent coating material for optical device s like mirrors, reflectors, lenses etc. Moreover, SiO together with ZnS and other material is ideal for reflective coatings. In electronic applications, variety of insulating and dielectric properties can be achieved by proper selection of SiO film thickness. For example, it is used in thin-film capacitors, hybrid circuits, semiconductor components, and other electronic devices. SiO films are also deposited on aluminum surface mirrors and gratings as protection against corrosion and wear.
