Trioxane is a colorless, crystalline, toxic solid with a chloroform like odor and highly flammable; its flame is nearly invisible. It is stable under ordinary conditions but over time slowly sublimes to formaldehyde. It can be considered a weakly bound polymer of formaldehyde and is used in organic synthesis, as a disinfectant, and as solid fuel, e.g for outdoor activities like camping. Toxic formaldehyde gas may be produced if trioxane decomposes.
