Layman's explanation: Chromium trioxide is a crystalline solid with a dark red color. It reacts with most organic material in a violent and often explosive fashion. Chromium trioxide is used as a strong acid and oxidizing agent in laboratories. It is also used as wood preservative, in chromium plating, Magnetic Tapes, Catalyst, copper stripping, aluminum anodizing, as corrosion inhibitor, in photography, purifying oil, in organic synthesis, fungicides, and fire-retardant chemicals. It is moderately toxic if ingested, but in contact it can cause severe burns.
