Layman's explanation: Isobutyric acid is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant, pungent, butter-fat odor. It is a volatile fatty acid that stops fungal growth, prevents mycotoxin generation and reduces the risk of cancer from exposure to mycotoxins. A. I. Virtanen was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945 for his research and inventions in agricultural and nutrition chemistry, especially for his fodder preservation method with lower volatile fatty acids among other acids. Isobutyric acid is also used for leather treating, as a disinfecting and tanning agent, and as varnish. It is a biologically occurring component of food (cheese, milk protein, vinegar and beer) and silage. It is also found naturally in the human body as a product of metabolism.
