Salicylylaldehyde is characterized as a colorless to yellow oily
liquid with a bitter almond color. It is relatively stable under normal use
and storage standards. Known to be combustible, salicylaldehyde is not
compatible with strong bases or strong oxidizing agents. It is extremely
harmful if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin and is generally
known to be hazardous. Salicylaldehyde is used commonly as a synthesis
intermediate in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and perfumeries. It is also
used as a chelating agent.
