Common name: Vitamin B1
CSD refcode: THIAMC11
Short description: Vitamin B1 is essential for the proper growth of mammals.
Keyword: anti-neuritic factor
Keyword: beriberi
Layman's explanation: Vitamin B1, also called thiamine, is an anti-neuritic factor, which releases energy from carbohydrates, alcohol and fat. Thiamine is part of the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid. It has been noted that Vitamin B1 can aid in learning and relieve symptoms of depression. Food sources of this compound are meat, legumes, wheat and potatoes. It is also synthesized by intestinal bacteria. A deficiency of thiamine can cause mental confusion, an enlarged heart, tachycardia, and a disease called beriberi.
