Common name: Threonine
Short description: Threonine is an essential amino acid that is useful in stabilizing blood sugar.
Keyword: blood sugar
Keyword: elastin
Keyword: collagen
CAS registry number: 72-19-5
CSD refcode: LTHREO01
IUPAC name: 2-Amino-3-hydroxy-butyric acid
Layman's explanation: Threonine is necessary for the formation of tooth enamel, elastin and collagen. Food high in threonine include: cottage cheese, fish, poultry, meat, and peanuts. Researchers suggest that increasing the amount of threonine to patients that have been burned or have had serious trauma may help in the recovery process. Too much threonine in the body can cause the formation of excess urea and ammonia toxicity in the body.
