Cortisone is a type of steroid hormone that is produced naturally by a gland found on top of the kidney called the adrenal gland. Cortisone is released from the adrenal gland when your body is under stress. The absence of cortisone is known as Addison’s disease, which can be fatal without treatment. Natural cortisone is released into the blood stream and is relatively short-acting. Synthetic cortisone, used in medical practice, was introduced in 1948 for its anti-inflammatory effect in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Cortisone injections can be used to treat the inflammation of small areas in conditions such as bursitis, tendonitis and arthritis. It can also be used to treat inflammation widespread throughout the body as produced by allergic reactions, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.
