Layman's explanation: Dicarbon monoxide is a carbonyl carbene (:C=C=O), a carbon with only two bonds and a pair of non-bonding electrons. These species are building blocks in the synthesis of organic compounds. When the divalent carbon is bonded to a metal, the carbene is more stable and plays an important role in organic synthesis.
