Layman's explanation: Picene was discovered in the pitchy residue obtained from the distillation of soft coal tar oils. The name comes from the Latin piceous, which means of or pertaining to pitch; resembling pitch in color or quality; pitchy. Picene is a colorless crystal in the form of large plates, which exhibits a bluish fluorescence. It can be used to trace the movement specific local coals to aquatic drainage basins, which is the result of erosion and mining activity.
