Layman's explanation: A German chemist, D bereiner, discovered furfural in 1821 and the first commercial production dates back to 1922. It originates from woody matter which results in special physical and chemical properties that are unique and very valuable. It is produced from things such as corncobs, cottonseed hulls and hull bran, oat hulls, bagasse, rice hulls, and peanut. It is made from these materials by means of hydrolysis. It is commonly used as a solvent, and is also applied in the manufacture of pesticides, phenolfurfural resins, tetrahydrofuran, dyes, plastics, antiseptics and perfumes. Furfural is the only chemical made from renewable resources that can replace crude-oil based chemicals.
