Layman's explanation: Melatonin is a hormone essential for functioning normally on a daily basis. This compound is heavily released into circulation when light sources are diminished, allowing for the process of sleep to ensue. Without production of proper melatonin levels, it is difficult to sleep and may be the cause for insomnia in many people. Melatonin is not only important in promoting sleep, it also helps regulate proper immune responses, brain maturation, and may help alleviate anxiety and depression. In the body, melatonin is biosynthesized in the pineal gland, which is located in the brain between the two cerebral hemispheres, or the seat of the soul as coined by Descartes. The major precursor to melatonin synthesis is the neurotransmitter serotonin.
