Layman's explanation: Discovered in 1619 by Bartoletti, lactose came from the Latin word Lac which means milk. Found in the milk of most mammals, Lactose is exclusive to the animal kingdom. Lactose is commonly used in pharmaceuticals because of its low toxicity, acceptable taste and its low reactivity. It is also used in cooking as a natural coloring. Lactose has been around for millions of years and has been aiding mammals in populating the earth.
