Common name: Showdomycin
CSD refcode: SHOMYC
Keyword: Steptomyces showdoensis
Keyword: leukemia
Short description: Showdomycin is an antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria.
Keyword: anti-tumor
Keyword: antibacterial
IUPAC name: 3-(b-D-Ribofuranosyl)-3-pyrroline-2,5-dione
Layman's explanation: Showdomycin was first isolated from Steptomyces showdoensis by Nishimura in the early 1960's. This antibiotic has antibacterial and antitumor activitities. Showdomycin also shows enzyme inhibitory abilities. As an antitumor, it prevents the growth of L1210 leukemia, HeLa cells, and Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. Their is a possiblity that showdomycin is also a sulfhydryl reagent. A sulfhydryl reagent is a substance that detects or measure a specific sulfhydryl group.
