Naproxen

Naproxen is a white, odorless solid.

Other names: Naprosyn, (+)-6-Methoxy-alpha-methyl-2-naphthalene-acetic acid

Layman's explanation: Naproxen is a NSAID which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Naproxen inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX), arachidonic acid and leukotrienes, although its therapeutic effect is believed to be due to the inhibition of COX. It alleviates pain caused from arthritis, tendonitis, and any type of sprain by reducing swelling and stiffness. When taken at high doses, naproxen can cause prolonged hematologic bleeding and distress of the gastrointestinal tract. It must be stored at room temperature in a relatively dry area. Naproxen can be obtained over-the-counter in weak doses, in products such as Aleve.
