Layman's explanation: Bromochlorofluoromethane is used primarily in halon extinguishers, which are kept in factories and laboratories in which oil and spirit fires could occur; the Federal Aviation Regulation requires that there be two halon fire extinguishers on board each aircraft. When in contact with hot metal surfaces, the bromochlorofluoromethane can produce hydrogen halide gases, which are very toxic to humans. Bromochlorofluoromethane can also lead to the depletion of the ozone layer and contributes to global warming.
