OxytetracyclineTetracycline is a common antibiotic.
Chemical Formula:
C22H24N2O9
Other names:
Tetracycline
Layman's explanation:
Tetracycline was discovered by Lloyd H. Conover and patented by him in 1955. It was originally obtained from streptomyces viridifaciens cultures, but now is usually produced synthetically. Its most common use is as an antibiotic, but it is also used for many other medical purposes such as acne prevention. It works by inhibiting aminoacyl-tRNA binding during the synthesis of proteins. Tetracycline should not be used by children under nine or by women in the last half of a pregnancy as it is a teratogen and can cause reproductive problems. It can also cause photosensitivity in some people.
