Thiamine is part of the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid. It has been noted that Vitamin B1 can aid in learning and relieve symptoms of depression. Food sources of this compound are meat, legumes, wheat and potatoes. It is also synthesized by intestinal bacteria. A deficiency of thiamine can cause mental confusion, an enlarged heart, tachycardia, and a disease called beriberi.
