Methionine is an essential amino acid that is involved with initiation of protein translation.

Layman's explanation: Methionine, a sulfur containing amino acid, performs many important functions. It is involved in the initiation of translation of proteins and benefits the body by acting as a lipotropic agent and preventing artherosclerosis. It works as an antioxidant and is often a part of the synthesis of other sulfur compounds. Methionine is essential to the health of mammals.
