Progesterone

Progesterone is the pregnancy hormone secreted by the ovaries.

Chemical Formula: C₁₂H₃₀O₂

Layman's explanation: The corpus luteum cells of the ovaries secrete progesterone. The main function of this hormone is to maintain pregnancy by preparing the uterine lining for zygote implantation. Barring pregnancy, progesterone is secreted during days 15-28 of the menstrual cycle. Cholesterol is the precursor molecule for progesterone, which was isolated and synthesized in 1934.
