Melatonin is not only important in promoting sleep, it also helps regulate proper immune responses, brain maturation, and may help alleviate anxiety and depression. In the body, melatonin is biosynthesized in the pineal gland, which is located in the brain between the two cerebral hemispheres, or the seat of the soul as coined by Descartes. The major precursor to melatonin synthesis is the neurotransmitter serotonin.
