Layman's explanation: Phycocyanobilin is a blue pigment found in algae. It is a water soluble protein that is used to absorb energy for the algae. It has a maximum absorbance at 680nm and it can be heated. Phycocyanobilin is a fairly stable entity, however it will dissociate under acidic or basic conditions.
