Layman's explanation:
Indole is a heteroaromatic compound obtained from the distillate of coal tar.
It is crystalline and melts at around 52 degrees Celsius. Interestingly, in the pure
concentrated form, this chemical has a bad odor. However, once diluted in a solvent, it
has a pleasant odor. As a result, indole is sometimes used in perfumes and oils.
Various derivatives can be found in the agrochemical and pharmaceutical industry. For
example, indoleacetic acid is used as a plant growth regulator, and indomethacin serves
as an anti-inflammatory agent.
