Layman's explanation: Silicon Monoxide is an amorphous brown solid, which is thermally stable up to 400 °C, where it disproportionates into quartz (SiO2) and elemental silicon (Si). Its applications range from electronics and protective coatings, to optics. It is an excellent coating material for optical devices like mirrors, reflectors, lenses etc. Moreover, SiO together with ZnS is ideal for reflective coatings. In electronic applications, a variety of insulating and dielectric properties can be achieved by proper selection of SiO film thickness. For example, it is used in thin-film capacitors, hybrid circuits, semiconductor components, and other electronic devices. SiO films are also deposited on aluminum surface mirrors and gratings as protection against corrosion and wear.
