Layman's explanation: p-hydroxybenzoic acid is a white crystalline powder; slightly soluble in water and soluble in hot alcohol. It is a food preservative and is used as stabilizers in cosmetic preparations. Also, p-hydroxybenzoic acid is used as a chemical intermediate for synthetic drugs, pharmaceuticals, dyes and plasticizers. Esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid are known as parabens (PHB), which are used as antimicrobial preservatives in deodorants, antiperspirants and in a wide range of other consumer products.
