Layman's explanation:
In 1936 caprolactam was polymerized to form Nylon-6 polyamide. Nylon-6 has a very high strength-to-weight ratio, along with good chemical and thermal stability and durability. Caprolactam can be formed into threads to be used for drive belts, sewing thread, tires, extension cords, textiles, etc. It is also used as a plastic for engineering at high temperatures. It is not very toxic, but can cause irritation and redness to the skin and eyes if exposed in chemical form. Caprolactam appears as a white, hygroscopic crystal, but when spun into nylon-6 is a thin white sheet.
