Layman's explanation: 4-Nitrophenol is used to manufacture drugs, fungicides, insecticides, and dyes and to darken leather. It enters the environment during manufacturing and processing, and has also been detected in the exhaust of motor vehicles. Possible routes of human exposure are inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. Acute inhalation in humans causes headaches, drowsiness, nausea, and cyanosis. In animals, exposure to 4-nitrophenol can cause dermal irritation, erythema, scaling has been noticed. The compound is a breakdown product of pesticides like parathion and fluoridifen, and can also be formed in air due to the breakdown of many other manufactured chemicals. Most of it goes into water and soil, and very little into air.
