Short description: Fluoranthene is a component of diesel exhaust.
Keyword: PAH
Keyword: diesel exhaust
CAS registry number: 206-44-0
Common name: Fluoranthene
IUPAC name: Fluoranthene
Layman's explanation: The tetracyclic hydrocarbon fluoranthene is a yellow needlelike crystal primarily used as a research chemical, which can also be found in diesel exhaust. Like many other polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs, fluoranthene is incompatible with strong oxidants and insoluble in water. It is however soluble in chloroform, carbon disulfide, ether, and benzene. Solid fluoranthene is stable under standard temperature and pressure, but is sensitive to prolonged exposure to light. In solution the stability is limited to 24 hours under normal lab conditions. No data is available on the teratogenicity, carcinogenicity, or neurotoxicity to humans as the toxicological properties have not been fully investigated. Fluoranthene targets the heart, liver, and lungs. Should contact occur, irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system may result, and medical attention should be sought.
