Layman's explanation: Rhodochrosite is a rose colored mineral that was discovered by Inca Ripac, and Incan ruler around the 13th century. It is made when manganese is dissolved by ground water and attaches to a carbonate. Rhodochrosite is found in caverns as pink banded stalactites, or an icicle shaped mineral deposit associated with caves. Although found in many locations, the best area is the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado. It is used as ornamentals, a semi-precious gemstone, mineral specimen, or as a minor ore of manganese.
