Layman's explanation: EDTA is a powerful chelating ligand. It binds to most metals with several of its coordination sites. It has numerous applications because of is extraordinary metal binging properties. For example it is an ingredient in soaps and other detergents to capture Ca and Mg ions and reduce water hardness. In fertilizers its iron, zinc and copper complexes are added particularly in calcareous soil. Its iron complex also is used as an oxidizing agent in photography. The extensive use of EDTA and slow degradation as led to it being one of the most abundant manmade compounds in surface waters. The powerful metal binding leads in the environment to mobilization, transport, and enhanced bio-availability of heavy metals in river and lake sediments and soils.
