Layman's explanation: Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and it inhibits the enzyme, cyclooxygenase (COX). As a result, it is used to alleviate pain caused from arthritis, tendonitis, and any type of sprain by reducing swelling and stiffness. When taken at high doses, naproxen can cause prolonged hematologic bleeding and distress of the gastrointestinal tract. Naproxen can be obtained over-the-counter in low doses, in products such as Aleve.
