Layman's explanation: Caryophyllene is found in many plants, particularly the satureoides plant, and has a scent similar to cloves. The compound has a woody and spicy taste, and is dry and tenacious. Common spices in which this compound is found are basil and black pepper. Caryophyllene is a sesquiterpene, a type of terpene, and is a colorless or pale yellow liquid. Caryophyllene is used also in synthetic substances such as perfume and other fragranced products.
