Cyclopropane

Cyclopropane is used as an anesthetic and as a precursor to many pharmaceuticals.

Other names: trimethylene, Cyclopropane

Layman's explanation: George Lucas, M.D. and Vilyien Henderson, M.D., of Toronto, Canada, discovered the anesthetic and explosive properties of cyclopropane in 1929. Cyclopropane is a flammable gas, which can form explosive mixtures when in contact with air. In addition, cyclopropane may also build up it own static electrical charges, causing its own vapors to ignite. Thus, inhalation of cyclopropane can cause dizziness and lead to unconsciousness. Due to this affect, cyclopropane is used as a surgical anesthetic. Very high consumptions of cyclopropane can cause comas and even death.
