Pentane

Pentane is a linear five-carbon hydrocarbon.

Layman's explanation: Pentane is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in water. It is most commonly used as a blowing agent in the production of expandable polystyrene, a type of foam. Also it is used as a chemical intermediate, solvent, and anesthetic. It is also very flammable and produces explosive mixtures with air. Some derivatives are pentanol, pentanone, pentaldehyde, and pentanoic acid.
