Layman's explanation: Iron monoxide is an odorless black powder. Technologies and uses of iron and iron oxide powders have progressed steadily. Synthetic iron oxide powders are used primarily for pigmentary and magnetic properties. These powders are inexpensive to make and are used to color concrete products, paints, plastics and other media.
