Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965 while trying to create an ulcer treatment drug, it was approved in 1981. Aspartame is produced artificially by combining methanol, phenylalanine, and aspartic acid. Also known as NutraSweet, Aspartame is found in beverages of several types and in many foods. NutraSweet is 200 times sweeter than sucrose, which is common table sugar.
