Diazomethane is a yellow gas with a musty odor.

Layman's explanation: Diazomethane is used as a derivatization agent as it is used to methylate compounds, especially those in the presence of substances with active hydrogens. It will react with copper powder to produce nitrogen and solid-white polymethylene. Heavier than air, diazomethane may travel along the ground. Diazomethane has been shown to be carcinogenic in some animals. Exposure to the compound can cause irritation in the eyes, coughing, shortness of breath, headache, fatigue, flush skin, fever, chest pain and other symptoms.
