Molybdenum hexacarbonylMolybdenum hexacarbonyl is a central molybdenum atom surrounded by 6 carbonyl ligands.
Chemical Formula:
Mo(CO)6
Other names:
Layman's explanation:
Molybdenum Hexacarbonyl at room temperature is colorless and crystalline solid. It is sparingly soluble but goes from solid to gas phase, or sublimes, very easily where it can then be purified by distillation. Molybdenum Hexacarbonyl is very useful in the synthesis of other Molybdenum derivatives because the carbonyl ligands can be replaced by others dependent on what it is reacted with. This verstility makes the compound very important in the production of steel, lubricants, and catalysts. The catalysts made from molybdenum compounds are usually used as oxidizing agents or to desulphurize oil before it can be further refined and processed.
