Chlorine Monoxide

Chlorine monoxide plays an important role in the breakdown of the stratospheric ozone.

Other names: Chlorine Monoxide
Layman's explanation: Chlorine monoxide and its dimer are originated primarily from halocarbons, molecules created by humans for industrial uses like refrigeration. ClO can react with an oxygen atom to release free chlorine radical. These radicals can act as a catalyst in the destruction of ozone while not being destroyed themselves. As a result, one Cl atom can destroy thousands of ozone molecules. While in the process of destroying ozone, chlorine dimer forms again, restarting the process of ozone destruction. It is a chain reaction that finishes when Cl is sequestered as HCl or another reservoir species.
