Nitrobenzene, a product of coal tar, was first isolated in 1834 by E. Mitscherlich. The compound is found in shoe and floor polish, paint solvents, and leather dressings. It has been used to mask repulsive odors and as a component of perfume production. Commercially it is used for the preparation of aniline and of benzidine.
