Testosterone

Testosterone is a hormone essential to both males and females.

Layman's explanation: Testosterone is vital to normal growth and development of sex and reproductive organs. It controls the development of secondary male sex characteristics like musculature, bone mass, and vocal chord thickening. Also, testosterone helps maintain energy level, mood, fertility, and sexual desire in both males and females. In males, testosterone is produced by the testes, carried through the blood stream and stored in bone and muscle tissue, while in females, who produce approximately a tenth less than males, it is synthesized in the adrenal glands and in the ovaries. Depending upon age, abnormally low levels of testosterone can lead to problems in muscle and bone development, underdeveloped genitalia, and diminished virility. Testosterone given orally can cause liver problems.
