Eosin Y

Other names: Eosin
Layman's explanation: Eosins are orange to red dyes that are made from coal tar. Their hue and color intensity dependents on the substituents on the anthracene. Shown is eosinY, which is used in histology to stain samples of blood, muscle, and bone marrow. Eosins are often used as counterstains to haematoxylin. The process is called HandE staining and the acidic eosin dyes the basic parts of a sample and the basic haematoxylin colors the acidic parts. Eosin is also used to dye fabric such as silk, wool, and nylon.
