Stilbene

Stilbenes are used in detergents as optical brighteners.

Other names: trans-1,2-Diphenylethylene
Layman's explanation: Stilbene has two isomers the E and Z form where the large phenyl groups are opposite (E) or together (Z) with respect to ethene in the center of compound. Shown is the more stable E-isomer. It is used in the manufacture of optical brighteners (for example for detergents) and dyes. It is also used as a gain (in electronics the ratio between out and input) medium in dye lasers. Dye lasers are based on an organic dye in a solution and usually have a wider range of wavelengths in comparison to solid-state lasers. Stilbene derivatives (stibenoids) are found in plants, for examples in the skins of berries, grapes, and nuts. A widely know stibenoid is resveratrol, which can be found in red wine.
