Layman's explanation: PABA is used in sunscreen to protect the skin from damaging ultraviolet radiation by converting light into heat. However, recent studies indicate that PABA causes DNA defects and skin cancer. PABA is also an essential nutrient for some bacteria. It is sometimes marketed as essential nutrients for humans (Vitamin B-x) as is stimulates activity of intestinal bacterial. It is also used in the manufacture of azo dyes, esters, and folic acid (vitamin B).
