Ethyl carbamate has been used as a solubilizer, a co-solvent for pesticides, a reagent in the production of pharmaceuticals, and as an agent to treat certain kinds of leukemia. It is released into the environment during its manufacture and through its use in the preparation of the above substances. Ethyl carbamate is moderately toxic and high exposure levels can damage the kidneys or liver and cause dizziness, vomiting, and unconsciousness. It has also been shown to cause cancer in animals. Ethyl carbamate biodegrades fairly rapidly in the environment, but has been detected in drinking water and is classified as a toxic air contaminant by the US EPA. Most exposures occur in the workplace or through the consumption of fermented foods and alcoholic beverages.
